Rant: my grandma's percolator vs the $22 pour over kit I use now
Up until 2019 I brewed in the same steel percolator my grandma used in Tulsa, and I swore the burnt edge was part of the flavor. Now I'm using a $22 plastic dripper and a kettle from Goodwill, and honestly the percolator was just hiding bad beans, so what's the one old gadget you still can't give up?
Gotta disagree on the percolator hiding bad beans. That burnt edge didn't hide anything, it just covered up the good stuff with ash. My mom still runs her old Farberware and I've had cups from it that taste like licking a campfire, and she uses decent beans. A drip cone lets you actually taste what you paid for, so the switch makes sense to me. The one old thing I keep is a beat up cast iron skillet, because nothing new holds heat like that thing does.
