Old timer told me to ditch the weight belt and go with a harness setup

Guy named Sully on a Gulf rig told me harnesses were safer for deep work. I laughed it off until I got tangled on a lift bag at 110 feet last month and the weight belt nearly pinned me. Has anyone else had a close call with a belt that made you switch?

That Sully fella was looking out for you. Had a similar thing happen a few years back off the coast of Louisiana. Was running a lift bag on a bunch of pipe and the bag caught on a valve. The weight belt dug into my side and tried to roll me over. Was kicking like crazy to stay upright. Switched to a harness the next week. Never looked back. The difference is night and day when you get in a bind underwater.

Yeah but did you end up with a bruised rib from digging that weight belt in? Sounds like you were one good wave away from getting rolled over like a turtle on its back. Glad you made it out okay though, that lift bag stuff is sketchy with all those valves everywhere.

Not sure I agree with you on the harness thing @miles72. I get why you switched, but I've had a belt save my ass before when I needed to ditch it fast in a panic. The harness is great for stability, but if you get tangled, you're stuck with it. Different risks, I guess.
