The day the viz cleared up in Port Angeles, best dive of my season

Last Thursday I had a job swapping out anode bags on a mooring buoy out in Port Angeles harbor. Water was pea soup at the surface, I was honestly dreading it. But about 25 feet down it just opened up, crystal clear, could see the whole line and the bottom like it was a pool. Got the job done in half the time because I wasn't feeling around blind, and the current stayed calm the whole shift. Has anyone else had a site that looks terrible from the boat but turns out perfect below the thermocline?

That "could see the whole line like it was a pool" bit hit home, I've had the same thing happen up near Bellingham where the top layer was trash but once you dropped past the muck it was like someone switched the lights on. If the tide's been sitting still for a couple days, that's usually my cue to check below the thermocline before calling the site a bust. Saves a lot of time when you know the bad viz is just a surface thing and not the whole column.

Think it’s like that with a lot of stuff, @john_cooper, the surface always lies to you and you gotta push past the ugly part to find the good stuff underneath. Same way I feel about foggy mornings in town, looks like a wasted day until the sun burns through and it’s the clearest afternoon all week.
