A guy in Omaha told me his crew never uses a magnesium float on flatwork

We were both waiting for a load at the batch plant and he said it leaves too many marks. I tried it on a garage slab last week and honestly, the finish was way smoother with just a wood float and a steel trowel. Anyone else skip the mag float on certain jobs?

My buddy in Kansas City swears by a wood float for driveways.

Listen to that guy from Omaha. I've seen mag floats leave those little lines that just WON'T come out, especially if the mix is a bit hot. So @miam75, when your buddy in KC does driveways with just wood, does he go straight from wood to steel trowel, or does he still use a fresno in there? Trying to picture the exact steps because timing is everything.

That "leaves too many marks" thing is what I don't get. A good mag float doesn't leave lines if you keep it flat and clean it off. On a garage slab, I use the mag right after edging to pull up cream and fill small holes before I even touch the wood float. Skipping it means you're fighting a rougher surface with your wood float, wasting time.
