I listened to some guy on Reddit about booking flights 6 months ahead
He swore you always get the best price booking domestic 6 months out... so I booked my trip to Denver in January for July and it was $180 more than what my coworker paid booking the same flight 3 weeks before. Has anyone else had travel "advice" backfire like that?

Oh man, that is such a bummer! I read somewhere that the whole "book 6 months ahead" thing is kind of a myth for domestic flights. The sweet spot is usually more like 1 to 3 months out for the best deals. I guess airlines change their prices based on demand and all that. Plus, booking a holiday trip to Denver in July, that's peak season so prices are just high no matter when you buy. Hope the trip itself was worth the extra cash!

A friend of mine once told me to always book hotels through a certain third party site because you get "exclusive deals" and I ended up with a room that smelled like old socks and had a broken AC in August. That cost me more in canceled reservations and stress than if I'd just booked directly. Now I treat travel advice like I treat cooking tips from my uncle who burns toast - take it with a grain of salt and check multiple sources. At least you got a story out of it, right? I still have nightmares about that hotel lobby.

Three years ago I followed some travel blogger's "pro tip" to book a hotel in Chicago through a random third party site and ended up in a place where the "view" was literally a brick wall two feet from the window. @taylor.amy you're spot on about checking multiple sources because I learned that lesson the hard way too! Now I treat any travel advice like I treat my own attempts at fixing a leaky faucet - I assume I'm going to make it worse before I make it better. At least your old sock room and my brick wall view got us both a funny story to tell at parties right? I still check hotel reviews for that specific Chicago hotel just to see if anyone else got stuck looking at that same depressing wall.
