Rant: My old "cool aunt" Myspace angle from a 2007 trip to Gatlinburg makes me want to delete the whole internet
I was going through my old Photobucket account last Tuesday and found a shot I took in Gatlinburg back in 2007 where I thought I looked so mysterious holding a cigarette I wasn't even smoking. The caption was "livin on the edge" and I had 11 comments saying I was goals, and now I can't look my husband in the eye. I get that we all had a phase, but did anyone else's cringe peak at a specific family vacation spot, or am I alone in wanting to burn the whole Smoky Mountains down?
Three years ago a photo of me from a work party made the rounds and I still cringe when I think about it. But here's the thing, that picture also shows me standing next to a coworker who passed away two years later, and his family asked me for copies. So yeah, some old stuff hurts to look at, but it's still part of the record. If we let everyone scrub whatever makes them uncomfortable, we lose the stuff that matters too. The answer isn't wiping the whole internet, it's giving people better tools to control who sees what. Those are two very different things.
