Why does nobody talk about how much insulation changes the feel of a room
I used to think spray foam was just for rich people and that regular batt insulation was good enough for any custom build. Then I helped my uncle finish his basement in Fort Collins about 8 months ago and we did one wall with 2 inch closed cell foam and the rest with the cheap stuff. Standing in that corner by the foam wall in January, you could not feel any cold coming through at all, but two feet over by the batt wall it felt like a window was cracked open. He ran a thermal camera on both sides and the foam wall stayed at 68 while the other wall dropped to 54 near the rim joist. His furnace also kicked on way less, his January gas bill came in around $90 versus $180 the year before in the same space. I always figured the extra cost was not worth it but watching that number drop changed my mind fast. Now I want to know if anyone here has used open cell on a whole house and regretted it, or if closed cell everywhere is really the way to go.
That "felt like a window was cracked open" part is so real, my wife called me crazy for saying the exact same thing in our old place until we did the rim joist right. Closed cell costs more up front but watching the gas bill cut in half is all the proof you need lol.
