I thought my dad's old password book was a bad idea, but it saved my whole family

Honestly, I used to give my dad a hard time for keeping all his passwords in a small notebook he kept in his desk. I told him for years it was a huge risk and he should use a password manager like I do. Then, about three months ago, my mom's main email got hacked. The hacker locked her out and started trying to reset passwords for her bank and other stuff. It was a total mess. My dad pulled out his book, found the answers to her old security questions from like 2005, and we got the account back through the provider's help line. The hacker had changed the security answers to new fake ones. Tbh, that little book, locked in a drawer at home, turned out to be the only backup that worked. Has anyone else had a simple, physical backup plan actually save them when digital stuff failed?

But that is just pure luck. What if there was a fire or a break in? That book is gone forever. A good password manager with a backup code printed and stored somewhere safe is way better. That book has EVERYTHING in one spot, no encryption, just sitting there. You got lucky this time, but it is a huge single point of failure.

Ever notice how analog beats digital when it really counts?

Security questions from 2005 still worked?
