My home server got hit with a ransomware note after I skipped one update
Ignored a patch for my NAS for maybe two weeks, figured it could wait. The cleanup and restore from my offline backup took three full days of constant work. How often do you guys actually apply security updates, immediately or in batches?

Honestly how bad can skipping one update really be? I've left my router firmware outdated for months with no issues. Sometimes it feels like security companies just want to scare us into constant updates. Three days of work from one missed patch seems like crazy bad luck, not the normal thing.

Ever play Russian roulette and think "wow, this is fine so far"? That's your router plan. The scary updates are for the holes they already know about, so you're just betting no one finds your specific outdated box. Calling three days of recovery "bad luck" is like calling a house fire "unexpected warmth" because your smoke alarm was beeping for months.
