Random guy at a pawn shop in Tucson changed how I view vintage audio gear

I was browsing this dusty pawn shop on Oracle Road last Tuesday, and this older dude walks up while I'm looking at a beat up Marantz receiver. He tells me not to waste my money on the brand name stuff, said the real hidden gems are the cheap Japanese receivers from the mid 80s that nobody wants. He pointed me toward a $40 Technics unit that looked like junk, but after cleaning it up it sounds better than my buddy's $500 setup. Has anyone else had random strangers steer them away from the obvious choice and toward something way cheaper?

That old timer knew what he was talking about. Those mid 80s Technics units were built like tanks and had really good internal components even if the faceplates were boring looking metal. Did he give you any tips on spotting the good ones besides just avoiding the big brands?

Yes! He said look for the heavy ones with metal faceplates, total beasts.
