Why does nobody talk about how much deleted scenes can ruin a movie's pacing?
I was talking to a buddy who works at a video rental store in Nashville last week, and he said something that really stuck with me. He said that sometimes the deleted scenes on a DVD are cut because they mess up the flow, not because they're bad. It hit different because I just watched an alternate ending for a horror film from 2019 and it totally explained a plot hole but made the whole movie drag. Now I'm thinking maybe not every cut scene needs to be put back in just because fans want it. Has anyone else watched a deleted scene and thought it actually made the movie worse?

Man, that thing about messing up the flow not the quality really hit home for me. I watched the extended cut of that sci-fi movie where they added back a whole subplot about the main character's dad, and it just killed the whole vibe. The scene was fine on its own but it broke up the tension so bad I almost fell asleep halfway through. Some stuff is just better left on the cutting room floor, even if it explains stuff. Feels like sometimes the best edit is the one that hurts to make.

Yeah, you ever catch yourself defending a deleted scene just because you wanted more of the movie? I used to be that guy, always wanting the extended cuts. But then I watched one where they put back a whole side plot about a character's past, and it just killed the momentum the original had built up. Now I get that sometimes the best thing for a movie is to let those scenes go.
