Can we talk about how I misread injector timing for 2 years?

I was setting timing on a 1999 Cummins 5.9 last month and kept getting weird smoke readings after startups. Turned out I had been using the top dead center mark for cylinder one instead of the mark for the injection pump. Anyone else mix up reference marks on older engines?

Honestly, is a little smoke really that big of a deal on an old Cummins? Those things run on pure stubbornness, not perfect timing. Tbh, you probably could've left it another 2 years and it would've been fine.
