Warning: I just logged my 500th hour on a single engine rebuild for a 6.7 Powerstroke and the number actually scared me a little.

The owner kept adding 'while you're in there' items, turning a simple top-end job into a full teardown, so what's the most hours you've ever sunk into one vehicle before it felt like a black hole?

500 hours is a serious chunk of your life. That scope creep is the absolute worst. My record was a 12-valve Cummins that ate 400 hours. It stops being a project and becomes a part-time job you pay for. You just have to walk away for a week sometimes.

Honestly, that "part-time job you pay for" line is so true. I had a Jeep Cherokee with a simple lift kit plan that turned into a full front end rebuild. Three weekends in I was replacing control arm bushings in the driveway at midnight. You hit a point where you're just throwing parts and hours at it to make the pain stop.
