My neighbor in Toledo said you should always use a 2x4 for a shed floor frame.

He was really sure about it, but I built mine with 2x6s on 12 inch centers and it feels way more solid. I think the extra $80 in lumber was worth it for something that holds my mower and tools. Anyone else go against the local advice on a project and have it work out better?

That whole "local way is the only way" thing gets me. My uncle swore by mixing concrete by hand for a post hole, said a mixer was for lazy people. Rented one anyway and my back was thanking me for a week. Sometimes the old advice is just about what they had around back then. Your shed floor sounds like it could hold a car now.

But is it really about being lazy or just using your head? My grandad used to break up hard ground with a pickaxe for days, called a powered auger cheating. We're not trying to prove how tough we are, we're trying to get a job done without throwing our back out. That old way was often just the only way they knew.
