Question about using old pipes for bookshelves

Saw this idea online and tried it in my study. The materials were cheap and it adds a unique touch to the room.

How hard was it to clean up the pipes before you put them up, @the_matthew? Some old pipe can be pretty grimy.

Heard those give a cool industrial look, which seems right for a study.

Didn't it look too rough before you cleaned it up?
