Finally got my layer management under control after a year of chaos
I was looking at a drawing from last March and compared it to one I finished yesterday for the same client in Boise. The old one had 45 layers with names like 'line1' and 'blue', total mess. I forced myself to use a strict naming system and a template with pre-set colors, and now the new project only has 18 clearly named layers. How do you guys handle keeping your layer palettes clean on big jobs?

I keep a text file with my layer naming rules open on a second screen. For big jobs, I start by purging unused layers at the end of each day, which stops the mess from building up. Using a set color for things like notes or dimensions helps me spot stray elements fast.

Like you, a strict template saved me from that "line1" chaos.

Purge unused layers every single day? That's some next level discipline right there. My list would be a mile long by Friday. The color coding for notes is smart though, might steal that.
