The grocery store self-checkout feud that took 40 minutes to settle

This lady in line behind me at the Kroger on 5th started recording me because the machine kept saying 'unexpected item in bagging area' and I guess she thought I was stealing. The manager had to come over and reset the whole thing twice before it finally took my cash, and by then she was yelling about how I was wasting her lunch break. Has anyone else gotten caught in one of those weird self-checkout standoffs where you're just trying to pay for soup?

You ever just stand there praying the machine will finally accept your $3.47 so you can escape before someone films you for the local news? My record is 15 minutes over a single bag of apples and I still think about it in the shower.

Machine at my local store ate my dollar once and then the screen just went full blue with a sad whale on it. People started backing away like I set off a bomb. Meanwhile the manager comes over and starts talking to the register like it's a misbehaving dog, saying "come on buddy, work with me" and I'm just standing there holding a frozen pizza that's starting to sweat. Finally some kid in a hoodie walks up, hits the side of the machine with his palm, and it just spits out my change like nothing happened. Now I always tap the screen three times before paying. Superstition? Maybe. But that unholy machine knows what it did.
