A chat with a retired operator in Mobile made me see my cutterhead maintenance in a new light.

He said 'you're not just cleaning mud, you're keeping a 200-ton machine from shaking itself apart,' and that simple shift from chore to duty finally got me to stick to the schedule, so how do you guys make the boring checks feel less like a waste of time?

Honestly? I mean, it's still just cleaning mud. Idk if I'm buying the whole "machine's diary" thing. Maybe it's just me but sometimes a loose bolt is just a loose bolt.

What story is your machine telling you?

For years I saw my pre-shift walkaround as just ticking boxes. A mechanic friend pointed out I was looking for stories, not problems. A fresh scrape on a guard tells you something hit it, a loose bolt is a sign of vibration. Now I'm not just checking things, I'm reading the machine's diary from the last shift. It changed a boring task into a bit of detective work.
