Finally got my mud mix right for a big ceiling patch in a Portland bungalow
Three years ago on a job in Seattle, I kept getting bubbles and cracks on any patch over 4 feet. Last month, I started adding a capful of dish soap to a 5 gallon bucket of hot mud, like an old timer showed me. Did a 6x8 foot section on Monday and it went on smooth as butter, no sanding ridges at all. Anyone else have a weird little trick that fixed a problem you had for a long time?

That's the best part of any trade. The real knowledge is always some weird little trick that fixes everything, never in the official manual.

Keep a small notebook in your toolbox. Write down those weird fixes when you learn them, because you will forget. I've seen guys with twenty years experience blank on a simple trick they used last month. It's never about the fancy tools, it's about knowing which specific tap to hit with a hammer.
