PSA: I think the standard 3/4 inch suction hose is a bad default for most river work.

Had a major clog last month on the Colorado River because we were moving too much fine sediment and the line couldn't keep up. We switched to a 1 inch line and production doubled with zero downtime. Anyone else find the smaller hose just invites problems?

Hit 5000 hours on my main workbench soldering iron and it made me think

I was doing some gear maintenance yesterday and my Hakko FX-888D showed exactly 5000 hours on the counter. I mean, I got that thing maybe 4 years ago when I started my own shop. It just kept going through daily board repairs, recaps, you name it. On one side, it feels like a win, like this tool earned its keep and I got my money's worth. But on the other, it got me wondering if I'm being cheap by not replacing a core piece of equipment that's seen that much use. The tip changes are getting more frequent and the temp recovery isn't instant like it was. Maybe it's just me, but at what point do you guys draw the line between 'if it ain't broke' and proactively swapping out a high-use tool? What's your personal cutoff for something like a soldering station?

My old way of pulling cable through a drop ceiling almost cost me a $2000 fine.

For years I'd just push the cable across the tiles without checking above them, but last month in a Phoenix office building I disturbed a fire barrier that wasn't visible from below. The fire marshal saw it during a routine inspection and wrote up the general contractor, who then billed my company. I switched to using a cheap inspection camera on a pole to look first before I push anything through a ceiling tile now. What's your go-to method for checking above a drop ceiling before you run a line?

My neighbor keeps calling her hydrangea a 'sun plant' and it's barely blooming

She planted a big leaf hydrangea, the 'Endless Summer' type, in full Arizona sun last spring and wonders why it looks fried. I explained that most hydrangeas need afternoon shade here, especially the mophead kinds. Has anyone else had to gently correct a friend's plant placement mistake?

Had a weirdly smooth day on the cutter suction dredge in Mobile Bay

Last Tuesday, we were pulling up a ton of old timber and I was sure we'd be down for hours clearing the pump. My lead, Carl, told me to just ease back on the swing speed and let the cutter chew through it slow. We cleared the whole section without a single clog and moved 15% more material than the day before. Anyone got other tricks for dealing with woody debris without stopping?

Just remembered the first time I saw a mobile check deposit

It was maybe 2012, and I was at my local branch in Springfield. I was waiting in line to deposit a check from a freelance job, and the guy ahead of me, maybe in his 60s, was talking to the teller. He held up his phone and said, 'My son showed me this trick. You just take a picture of it?' The teller smiled and walked him through it right there. I was kind of stunned you could do that. It felt like magic compared to driving across town. That one moment, watching him learn, really stuck with me as the start of everything moving to our phones. Now I can't remember the last time I stepped into a branch for a deposit. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you saw someone's first time with a now-normal banking tech?

Unpopular opinion: I think a lot of us are rushing the steam phase during a facial

I timed myself and realized I was only steaming for 4 minutes, but after extending it to a full 7, my extractions became way easier and gentler. Has anyone else found a sweet spot for steam time on different skin types?

Just realized mixing a little dish soap into my mud helps a ton on slick surfaces

I was taping a ceiling in this old, glossy-painted house in Cincinnati last month and my mud kept sliding right off the surface. Out of pure frustration, I squirted a tiny bit of Dawn into a 5-gallon bucket of joint compound. It made the mud WAY more sticky and it held perfectly on that slick paint. I've used it on three jobs since with no issues. Has anyone else tried this or found a better trick for adhesion problems?
