Wasn't a believer in the hot mud trick for butt joints until last week...
I always used all purpose for my butt joints and fought through the shrinkage forever. A guy named Pete on a job in Tacoma told me to try hot mud with a little water mixed in to slow it down. I got 5 minutes of working time before it set but the joint was dead flat with almost no sanding needed. Has anyone else tried cutting their 90 minute mud with water or am I late to the party?

Wait, did Pete actually mix it wetter than usual or just say that's what he did? I remember one time I was working on a batch and got all cocky about the consistency, ended up with this sloppy mess that took forever to set right. My uncle always said "too wet and you're just making soup, not cement" but I never listened. Now I swear by the feel test, if it sticks to the trowel just right you're golden. Still cracks me up thinking about that disaster, Pete probably saved you from a real headache.
