Finally figured out my garage dust problem with a $40 swap

Used to just blast the air compressor at everything after sanding, ended up with a fine layer of MDF powder on every tool in the shop. Switched to a simple shop vac with a cyclone separator hooked to the sander about 3 months ago, near Mill Woods. Now I barely wipe down the drill press and the filter lasts way longer. Anyone else do the bucket lid trick or are you still on the blow-away method?

man the bucket lid trick is legit, i did the same thing last winter after the whole garage looked like a snowstorm hit it. honestly i was skeptical at first cause it seemed too simple but that little cyclone thing catches almost everything before it even hits the vac. my old shop vac used to clog up every couple weeks and now i can't remember the last time i had to clean the filter, plus the dust in the air is basically gone which my sinuses really appreciate. the drill press and my bandsaw used to get this grey fuzz on everything and now it's just a quick wipe here and there, totally worth the forty bucks.

Hell yeah, that cyclone separator is the real deal. I run the same setup and the only thing I'd add is to empty the bucket before it gets half full, otherwise the vortex starts kicking dust back out.
