Talking to my uncle about his old paint job changed how I see prep work

My uncle was helping me paint my basement last weekend and he kept going on about sanding every little bump. I always thought primer would cover stuff like that. He showed me a wall in his garage he did 15 years ago that still looks flat because he took the time to sand and fill every hole. Made me think I've been cutting corners on prep for years. Anyone else find out they were doing something the hard way after watching someone else do it right?

Same thing happened to me with drywall mud. Used to think one coat was good enough until a buddy showed me his three coat method. Totally changes how the final look turns out, lol.

Started using a sponge between coats after seeing it on a DIY video and it blew my mind. Way less dust and the mud just melts into a smoother finish.

Man, that three coat method was a game changer for me too. My neighbor showed me his trick with a slightly damp sponge for smoothing between layers and I thought he was crazy at first. Have you ever tried that or do you just stick to sanding?
