Rant: I thought the new digital governor test tool was just a gimmick until last Tuesday.
We had a weird intermittent overspeed fault on a 20 story Otis job in Cincinnati that the old analog tester just could not pin down. The shop foreman made me try the new Digi-Speed unit and it caught a tiny voltage spike from the generator that only happened under full load. Has anyone else been pushed to use one of these and had it actually fix a ghost problem?

Was it really a voltage spike from the generator, or could it have been a feedback issue from the drive? Those Digi-Speed units are good, but they can sometimes misread the source of a signal. We had a similar reading once that turned out to be a bad bearing in the motor causing electrical noise. It did solve our ghost problem too, but it sent us looking in the wrong place for half a day. The new tools are great for catching the glitch, you just have to be careful how you interpret the data.

Feedback from the drive" is a good point, but our spike was definitely from the generator side.

Yeah, the "wrong place for half a day" part hits home. I've chased enough generator ghosts that turned out to be a loose wire to fill a bad horror movie. The data doesn't lie, but my first guess sure does.
