Boost controller failed mid pull on I-5 outside Tacoma
Was doing a 3rd gear pull on a empty stretch near Exit 135. Truck started surging hard at 4500 RPM. Boost shot to 22 PSI on a stock block. Let off quick but the engine was already pinging. Limped it home at 45 mph. Had to replace the solenoid and reflash the tune. Anyone else had a cheap boost controller crap out at the worst time?

I read a thread over on a Tacoma forum where a guy had almost the exact same thing happen with a cheap manual boost controller from one of those no-name eBay brands. He said his went bad after about 6 months and spiked boost to 24 psi on a rainy night. That surge you felt, the pinging, that's exactly what kills these motors. Stock internals just can't handle that pressure for even a second. Glad you caught it quick, a lot of people don't and end up with a windowed block.

Is it really that fragile or was he just unlucky?
