My old rounding hammer finally gave up the ghost on a big draft horse shoe yesterday
The head just flew off the handle while I was setting a clip, scared the horse and me half to death (it was a Percheron for a client in Lexington). I had to finish the job with my cross pein, which was not ideal for that kind of work. What's your go-to backup tool when your primary one fails mid-job?

Wow, that's wild! My old farrier always kept a second rounding hammer in his truck.

Smart move by your old farrier, @paige86, since a backup tool saves a trip back home.

Read an article once about farriers keeping a "bailout bag" with a basic duplicate of their main tools. Makes total sense after seeing a guy at a clinic have his hammer head come loose on a trailer hitch. His backup was just a cheap hardware store claw hammer, but it got the last two nails set.
