Can we talk about the time I built a fence and birds moved in before I finished?

I was adding a decorative trellis top to my backyard fence for fun. As soon as I stepped back to look, a bunch of sparrows started building nests in the gaps. I had to gently shoo them away every time I tried to add the final boards. It turned into a whole silly standoff for an afternoon. Who knew fence building could include wildlife management?

Notice how nature always claims unfinished projects.

Yeah Karen_Flores37 has a point about nature taking over unfinished stuff, but honestly they'll move into finished projects too. I've seen birds build nests in brand new gutter guards and squirrels chew through fresh vinyl siding. Your fence just happened to be the best open house on the block that day. Sometimes wildlife management is just part of home ownership, finished or not.

Totally agree with @thea_wood86 about them moving into finished stuff. I had a robin build a nest on top of my porch light the week after I installed it, right in the middle of the motion sensor. It's like they see any new structure as a personal invitation.
