My airlock bubbler cracked right in the middle of a sauerkraut ferment

It happened last Thursday night, and I found the little plastic piece split right down the side. I had to quickly rig up a balloon over the mouth of my 1-gallon jar as a temporary airlock. Has anyone else had a bubbler fail, and what's a good sturdy brand to replace it with?

Ugh, a cracked bubbler is the worst. My cheap airlock from a starter kit did the same thing. I ended up ditching the plastic ones for good. I switched to a simple S-shaped glass airlock and it's been solid for years, no cracks even when I knock it around. The balloon trick is a classic save though, good thinking.

That exact thing happened to me with a cheap plastic airlock from a kit. I lost a whole batch of pickles before I figured it out. Now I only use the three-piece airlocks, the kind you can take apart to clean. I've had the same three of them for about five years now and they've never cracked, even when I drop them in the sink. The balloon was a smart move to save your kraut.

Honestly I've had the OPPOSITE problem with those three-piece ones. The little inner pieces always get lost when I clean them, and the seal isn't as tight after a few years. My cheap one-piece airlock from the kit is still going strong after three years, just don't over-tighten the lid.
