Tried a different riser height on our old Jones and Lamson molding line
We were running a big batch of gray iron pump housings and the boss said to try a 2 inch riser instead of our usual 2.5. I figured we'd get some shrinkage... but the castings came out solid with way less clean-up. Learned that old machine can handle a tighter pour if the metal temp is just right. Anyone else had a win by tweaking an old setup?

Man, that's a solid find. It's easy to forget those old machines have some room for fine-tuning once you get to know them. Getting a cleaner casting while using less metal is a huge win on a long run. Makes all the setup time worth it.

Yeah, that setup time payoff is real. My buddy runs a small shop and he said the same thing about his old press, took him a week to dial it in but now it just hums.

But @sandrajackson, that setup time is a killer on short runs.
