Why does nobody talk about the mandatory soldering skills for serious retro collectors?

I acquired a long-sought cartridge of a classic SNES title, but every save file vanished overnight. Turns out, the onboard battery was shot, so I watched a tutorial, bought a replacement, and performed surgery with a steady hand. Are we all just accepting that part of collecting these old games is learning basic electronics repair?

But why should we have to risk damaging rare games? Professional repair services exist for a reason.

Get where you're coming from, I used to swear by pros only! Then I fixed a minor cartridge issue myself and realized how empowering it is to learn the basics. Now I save the truly complex jobs for experts but handle simple things, it's a game changer!

Tbh this whole thread reminds me of when I tried restoring a vintage pocket radio from a flea market. Got way too deep into solder tutorials online and almost melted a crucial capacitor. My cousin who's an electrical engineer had to bail me out, but now I can at least replace batteries and clean contacts without fear. That weird middle zone where DIY confidence meets respecting the real expertise is so real.
