Warning: Your eco-friendly smart home is probably a power hog if you ignore standby loads
Just realized after monitoring my own setup that standby power from 'green' devices is killing my savings. I picked up how to use a kill-a-watt meter and the results were shocking, like my smart thermostat sucking 20 watts 24/7. Now I audit every gadget and unplug anything non-essential, which is a skill nobody talks about. For example, my friend's 'energy efficient' LED strips drew more idle than when on. TBH, calling tech sustainable while ignoring vampire loads is pure hypocrisy. Mastering this cut my bill by 30% and exposed so much greenwashing. If you're not tracking standby, you're just pretending to be eco-conscious.

Okay, but hyping up vampire loads like they're the end of the world ignores how much energy smart devices save elsewhere! @the_joel made a good point about most thermostats sipping power, not guzzling it. The whole point of a smart thermostat is to optimize heating and cooling, which slashes your main energy use dramatically. Constantly unplugging things is a hassle that most folks won't stick with, and the actual standby waste is often pennies a month. We should celebrate tech that makes efficiency automatic, not scare people away from it because of a few watts in standby. The convenience and long term savings from automation far outweigh hunting down every phantom load.

Yeah the greenwashing is real... I true-up my own meter readings against the utility bill monthly and it's crazy how many "smart" devices fail. Finally cracked open my entertainment center's power strip after seeing the phantom load.

When you mentioned your smart thermostat sucking 20 watts... that's actually pretty unusual. Most models I've seen idle between 1 and 2 watts, so yours might be defective or an older power-hungry type. The broader point about vampire loads is totally valid though... just important to note that not all devices are that extreme. Proper auditing really does expose where the real waste is, beyond the obvious suspects. It's easy to miss how much variation there is between brands and even firmware versions.
