A client in Boise asked me to leave a dead snag for the woodpeckers.
He said, 'If it's not a hazard, can we just let it be a home?' I'd always been so focused on clean removal, but now I check every time. Anyone else started leaving more habitat trees after a client request?

Had a guy ask me to leave a gnarly old pine with a hollow spot last fall. Marked it safe and left it standing. Saw a pileated woodpecker working on it just last week, which felt pretty good. Changed how I look at a job site now, always scanning for those potential homes.

My buddy left a dead oak up on a job and a whole owl family moved in by spring. It really makes you look at trees differently.

Guess we're all running a wildlife hotel now.
