Bought a cheap voltage tester that nearly cost me a whole day's pay

I picked up a no-name brand tester for $15 at a local hardware store, and it gave me a false negative on a live 240 line in a basement rewire. Had to call in another guy to double-check, which set me back $200 and wasted three hours. What's a solid tester you all actually trust for residential work?

Vent: My 'quick fix' gravel path turned into a $300 mud pit

So I decided to put in a little walkway from my deck to the shed last spring. Thought I'd save cash and time by just dumping a few bags of gravel over the dirt. Didn't bother with any weed barrier or digging down. Big mistake. After a couple rainy weeks, the gravel just sank into the mud and weeds shot right up through it. Ended up with this lumpy, messy swamp trail. Had to dig the whole thing out, put down proper landscape fabric, and re-buy all the gravel. Wasted about $300 and a whole weekend. Anyone have a better method for a simple path that actually lasts?

Rant: I keep seeing agencies use the same boilerplate MSA for every client in every state.

After reviewing a contract from a Florida-based client last month that completely missed their specific data privacy obligations, I realized how many agencies just copy-paste a template without checking local laws, which is a huge liability, right?

I kept getting stuck on loops until I started drawing them out with a pen

I was trying to make a program that printed numbers 1 to 10, but it just kept running forever. After staring at the screen for an hour, I grabbed a notebook and drew a box for the starting number and arrows for each step. Seeing it on paper showed me I forgot to increase the number inside the loop, so it was always checking '1'. I fixed it by adding 'i = i + 1' and it worked first try. Now I sketch any tricky loop before I even type the code. Has anyone else found a simple trick like this that finally made loops click?
