Met a guy on the Wonderland Trail who thought he was being followed by a 'very quiet bear'
I was hiking near Mowich Lake last summer and this guy kept stopping to look behind him. After the fifth time, I asked if he was okay. He looked me dead in the eye and whispered, 'There's a bear back there, but it's being really polite about it.' Turned out it was just another hiker in a brown jacket about a quarter mile back, walking slowly. Has anyone else had a trail encounter where someone's imagination totally ran wild?

Polite bear" is a great trail story. People see what they're scared of.

Polite bear" is a good one. That reminds me of a time I was camping and my friend woke up the whole site yelling about a "crawling man" outside his tent. He was fully convinced. It was just the shadow of a tree branch moving in the wind, looking like an arm. Once your brain picks a scary shape, it just runs with it.
