Cleaning out the shed and found my first cordless drill from 2008, a Ryobi that's still kicking.

It hit me that I've been doing this backyard stuff for over 15 years now, which is wild because I still feel like I'm just figuring it out (and I still have that drill, even if the battery is shot).

Honestly, the fact it still works is a better ad for that brand than anything they could film. Makes you wonder if new stuff is built to last half as long.

That's a good point from mitchell.val about safety and energy use. But when you buy something new, do you ever feel like you're just renting it for a few years before it's designed to fail? I'd take a slightly less efficient appliance that I only have to buy once in my life.

But what about all the old stuff that broke right away? We only see the survivors. My grandpa had a fridge from the 50s that lasted, but his neighbor's blew up after five years. New things have safety features and use way less energy, which is a trade off. Maybe they don't last 50 years, but they're cheaper and smarter now.
