My neighbor Bob was right about paver base after all

He kept telling me I needed 6 inches of crushed stone for my 10x12 patio but I thought 3 would be fine since it was just for walking on. After 8 months half the pavers sank and I had to pull the whole thing up and start over. Has anyone else been stubborn about skipping the recommended depth only to regret it later?

8 months is brutal, sorry you had to redo it. Bob knew what he was talking about for sure. Sometimes the hard way is the only way to learn.

Totally agree, I did the same thing with my small garden path. I figured it's just for me walking on it, what's the worst that could happen? After one winter it was all wavy and uneven, looked terrible. Bob sounds like a smart guy, wish I had a neighbor like that before I started.

That Bob fella sounds like he's been around the block a few times. My wife's uncle Earl had a similar situation with his driveway, insisted on just pouring concrete over some old gravel and it cracked like a dry riverbed in a year. He spent the next two summers patching it up with bags of quickrete and swearing at the weather. Sometimes the shortcut just ain't worth the headache, especially when gravity and water are involved.
