Saw a coffee shop in Portland using QR codes on tables to boost their Instagram reach
I was at this spot called Tiny House Cafe last Tuesday and every table had a little card saying 'post your latte art with our hashtag for a free pastry'. The owner told me it doubled their weekly engagement in about 3 months. Has anyone else tried something similar that actually worked for their account?

Three months to double engagement sounds like a lot, but honestly, how many of those posts were just people holding up their phone to a QR code and forgetting about it. I've seen places try this and the engagement numbers look good on paper but you end up with a feed full of low-effort photos that don't really say anything about the coffee shop itself. Plus, once the free pastry offer stops, most of those people probably aren't sticking around to post again. It's more of a quick sugar hit for your account than real growth, if you ask me.

My buddy runs a shop that tried this exact thing and he said the QR code people actually hurt his real engagement because their low-effort posts pushed down his regulars' photos that actually had stories behind them. He ended up having to delete like 40% of them after the promo ended because they just looked like spam.

YES oh my god this is so real lmao. I saw a local bakery do a QR code contest for a free cake and their insta turned into a wasteland of blurry pics of the dessert table and people's thumbs holding up their phone to the code. It was so bad they had to go through and delete like 60 of them after the promo ended and their actual loyal customers were just buried under all that junk. My buddy tried it at his restaurant too and said half the QR posts were just people literally pointing at the code with zero context or story behind the photo. It's like yeah you get a quick spike in numbers but your feed becomes a graveyard of low effort spam and nobody wants to follow that.
