Hot take: my old way of welding a 3-inch pipe joint was costing me hours
I was working on a boiler feed line in Cincinnati and kept having to redo my root pass. My foreman watched me for five minutes and said, 'You're holding the torch too close, you're cooking the metal.' I switched to a longer arc and the bead laid down perfect on the first try. How do you guys find those little habits you didn't know were wrong?

My old foreman in Toledo used to say we all have blind spots the size of a dinner plate... I spent a whole year grinding down welds on structural steel because I thought more filler meant stronger. Turns out I was just making a huge, ugly mess for the grinder to fix. Sometimes you need someone to just point at the obvious thing you're doing and call it stupid.

Ever figure out why extra filler doesn't actually make the weld stronger? Was it just about the heat zone getting messed up, or something else you learned later?
