Rant: That journeyman in Houston made me feel like an idiot for my weld prep

Was talking with this old school guy Jim on the job in Houston last week. He saw me spend 20 mins grinding a bevel on a 2 inch tube and just shook his head. Told me I was burning through wheels for no reason and showed me how he does it with a flap disc in half the time. Made me wonder how much time I've wasted over the last 3 years doing it the long way. Anyone else get called out by an older hand for something basic you thought you had down?

Read a similar story on a welding forum a few months back where a guy said his mentor called him out for overgrinding on pipe prep. Made me rethink my own habits too. Funny how the simple stuff can get you the worst feedback.

My grinder gets way more workout than my brain sometimes.

Makes sense honestly. Grinding is a lot more forgiving than precision work. You can fix a grind mark but you cant undo a bad measurement or a wrong cut. That's why I always double check my layout before I spark up. Saves a ton of rework later.
