My old book club fell apart after 8 years together
We had this group that met every third Tuesday since 2016... then it just broke up last month. It started when three members got into a huge fight about whether 'The Goldfinch' was actually good or just long. Then two people moved away within the same week, and nobody wanted to pick a new book. I tried to keep it going by suggesting we switch to short stories, but only one person showed up to the last meeting. It's weird how something that seemed solid can just fizzle out like that. Has anyone else had a group just stop working after years together?

Yeah @xena1, that boxed wine situation was probably a sign the group had nowhere to go but down.

Oh man, that Goldfinch debate is a real friendship-ender right there. I still side-eye anyone who says it's bad, but maybe that's just my bad taste talking. My own book club died after our third meeting when we realized none of us actually finished the book we picked, so we just sat there awkwardly eating cheese. We tried to pivot to wine tasting and that also fizzled out fast because someone kept bringing cheap boxed stuff. Sometimes groups just run their course, like a library book that's way overdue.
