Overheard a librarian in Toledo scold a woman for dog-earing pages

I was at the Toledo Public Library last Tuesday picking up a hold, and I heard this librarian absolutely lay into a woman for folding down page corners. The librarian said it was 'destructive behavior that ruins books for future readers.' It made me think about how intense some book lovers get about stuff like that. Do you guys have any weird pet peeves about book care that surprise new members?

I feel like ray_miller41 nailed it with the spine cracking thing, that one drives me nuts too cause it makes the book fall apart faster. Honestly just tuck a receipt or junk mail in there instead of dog-earing, it's free and keeps the pages flat. Why risk getting yelled at by a librarian when there's paper literally everywhere?

We had a neighbor who always cracked the spines on paperbacks wide open, and over time those books looked like they went through a war. I always just use a bookmark or a scrap piece of paper, never had an issue.
