My neighbor called my garden 'just a hobby' and it made me think
I was showing my veggie patch to a neighbor, Mr. Jenkins, and he said, 'That's a nice little hobby, but real farming is a business.' He's been growing corn on his family's land for 40 years. It hit different because I've spent 3 years and over $500 turning my backyard into a food source. I used to just grow flowers, but now I have 12 tomato plants and beans for my family. It made me wonder if other plant lovers feel their gardens are seen as just a pastime. How do you explain the real work and value of your plants to people who don't get it?

But what if he's kinda right though? A hobby garden isn't the same as a farm that pays the bills. Why does it need to be seen as more than a fun pastime?

@gavin_hill27 gets it, my garden is just my happy place.

Used to think like gavin, but allen.ivan's point about a happy place is key. A garden's value isn't about money, it's about peace. Calling it just a hobby misses why people need it.
