That viral influencer workshop in Austin gave me advice that backfired hard
I paid $400 for a two day marketing workshop run by a 300k follower creator who said to lean into manufactured outrage around every brand misstep. So I posted a hot take on a food chain's stale PR statement, and my comments section turned into a war zone while the brand actually thanked the critic who called me out. She never mentioned that her own engagement tanked after she tried the same stunt, and now I've got 1,200 angry replies and zero new clients. Has anyone else followed advice from a big name and watched it blow up in their face within a week?

The brand mostly ignored you, they didn't really fire back at all.

The whole "manufactured outrage" thing sounds exhausting, and I get why it blew up on you. But honestly, that strategy only works if you have a thick skin and a fanbase that already agrees with you. You went at a brand that had zero reason to care about your hot take, so of course they fired back. Most big creators sell courses on what worked for them five years ago, not what works now. The real issue is that you paid $400 for a playbook that was already outdated. Maybe next time, skip the guru and just post stuff you actually believe in, even if it gets less attention. It won't get you 1,200 angry replies, but it also won't wreck your week.
