My aunt told me my chili was too watery so I stopped adding canned tomatoes straight

She came over for dinner last week and after one spoonful said it tasted like soup. I always just dumped a whole 28oz can of crushed tomatoes in without draining anything. Now I drain them first and add a little beef broth instead of water. Has anyone else had to adjust their chili game based on a blunt family member?

I heard Alton Brown say tomatoes need draining or they wreck the texture and he's usually right about stuff like that.

Wait, is that true? I always just dumped the whole can in and never thought twice about it. I used to think draining just meant losing flavor, but he's got a point about texture. Next batch I make I'm definitely draining them first, that watery chili has bugged me before and I just accepted it.

Man, chili is chili, who cares if it's a little soupy?
