Packed a carry-on for a week in Lisbon instead of checking a bag

Saved $70 on fees and spent zero time waiting at baggage claim. I just rolled everything and used packing cubes. Anyone have tips for fitting bulky items like hiking boots?

Wear the boots on the plane, they're the bulkiest thing. I always stuff my socks and small stuff inside them in the bag too. Rolling is good, but for a jacket I just tie it around my waist when boarding.

Totally agree with you @jesse994, wearing the boots is the only way to go. I learned that the hard way after getting stuck at security with chunky docs in my bag. Now I always wear my heaviest shoes on the plane and stuff them with socks and chargers when I'm not wearing them. The jacket around the waist trick is gold too, I do that with my hoodie all the time and it saves so much room in my carry on. Rolling clothes tight is solid but if you want to save even more space, try compression bags that you squeeze the air out of. I swear by that method for trips longer than a weekend.

Saw a travel blog say to use packing cubes for rolled clothes, keeps things tight.
