Stumbled on a stat about hostel prices in Japan that threw me off

I was planning a trip to Tokyo for next spring and started checking hostel rates. Found out that a dorm bed in Shinjuku can run $40-50 a night during peak season. That's wild to me because I paid $15 for a similar spot in Thailand two years ago. I checked a few comparison sites like Hostelworld and Booking.com to confirm. Has anyone else found decent budget lodging in Tokyo that doesn't break the bank?

My friend paid $55 for a capsule in Shibuya and said the guy next to him snored like a jet engine.

Those prices sound about right for Tokyo, actually. Thailand is cheaper across the board though, so it's not really a fair comparison. Have you looked at capsule hotels or guesthouses in areas like Asakusa or Ueno?

lol my buddy actually stayed at a capsule place in Asakusa last year and he said it was surprisingly comfy but the walls are basically paper thin. He could hear the guy next to him snoring all night lmao. Still way cheaper than the hotels he looked at though.
