Realized my $45 monthly subscription was costing me way more than I thought

I was sitting in my living room in Austin last Tuesday, going through bank statements for a refinance, and noticed a $45 charge for a software I hadn't touched in 4 months. That's $180 gone just like that. Anyone else find subscriptions they forgot about?

45 bucks a month for something you don't use? That's just being careless with your own money. I check my bank account every single week to make sure nothing stupid is pulling from it. You let it slide for 4 months, that's on you.

Has anyone else read that study they did about how subscription companies intentionally make it hard to cancel? I saw it on the news a few months back. They found that most people who sign up for free trials end up paying for at least a few months after because of all the hoops you have to jump through to stop it. And honestly, 45 bucks is a lot for some people but not enough to catch their eye every month. It's so easy to just glance at your statement and assume it's a lunch or something.

Think you're being a little harsh on them. Yeah it's their money, but companies design these subscriptions to be easy to forget about. They hide the charges, send no reminders, and make cancelling a huge pain. I've got plenty of friends who've had the same thing happen with gym memberships or streaming services. It doesn't mean they're careless, it just means life gets busy and these companies are really good at taking advantage of that. Feels like blaming the victim instead of the people who make it hard to notice.
