PSA: My quarterly tax payment got flagged for a tiny math error and it took 11 weeks to fix

I filed my estimated taxes online back in April, but I transposed two numbers in my total payment. The IRS sent a notice, but it got lost in the mail. I only found out when a penalty notice showed up in July. Calling them meant 3-hour hold times, and their online system wouldn't let me correct it for that specific quarter. I had to mail in a physical check for the difference with a letter, and it took them until last week to process it and remove the fees. Has anyone found a better way to track these notices or fix small errors without the whole paper trail nightmare?

Ugh, my friend had the same thing happen with a wrong digit on a form. Honestly, she just gave up and paid the extra fee to avoid the phone wait.

Seriously, how is their system still this bad? I had a similar mess last year where my payment just didn't match their record, off by like twelve bucks. The online portal was useless, said everything was fine when it clearly wasn't. I ended up having to fax over a copy of my bank statement, a fax, in this century. It still took them two months to clear it up.
