That one expense tracking trick that saved me $200 a month

I kept trying those fancy budgeting apps like YNAB and Mint but I always fell off after two weeks. Then I noticed I was losing track of small subscriptions like a $12 gym add-on and a $8 cloud storage fee I forgot about. So I started doing a manual check every Sunday morning on my checking account for any recurring charges under $20. In the first month I caught three things I didn't use anymore totaling $47. Then I looked at my grocery habits and realized I was buying snacks on impulse because I didn't have a list. Now I keep a running note on my phone and my spending dropped by about $200 in just six weeks. Has anyone else found a weird little trick that actually stuck with them?

Here is the thing about those little subscriptions, you are signing up for a service you want and then you just cancel it when you are done. That is a service you are paying for to get value from like the cloud storage or the gym add on. The real savings people miss is from buying in bulk or negotiating yearly rates on the stuff you actually use. That $20 a month you saved is just from stopping a service you liked enough to sign up for in the first place.

My friend Sarah signed up for a gym membership with a "free" personal trainer session. They lied about it. She wanted to cancel after the first month. They kept charging her for six months. She had to call her bank and everything. So yeah, canceling isn't always easy. That $20 a month is still money she lost.
