Went to a farm-to-table butcher shop in Portland last Saturday and saw the owner sharpening his knives on a ceramic coffee mug.
He said he lost his stone and figured the mug edge was good enough. Has anyone else seen this trick or am I the only one who thinks that's insane?

Respectfully, using a mug edge isn't insane, it actually works well in a pinch.

Last week I tried honing a pocket knife on a coffee mug at my desk and ended up with a tiny ceramic shard in my thumb. Guess that's what I get for trusting my morning routine over a proper stone. So yeah, mugs work great unless you're clumsy like me.

Mug edges totally have that rough ceramic texture that works great for a quick sharpening touch up. I keep my coffee mug on my desk and use the bottom unglazed ring when I need a fast edge fix. Way better than hunting for a stone when you just need to get through a few more cuts.
